BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) — Chen Zhiqiang is celebrating his decision 18 years ago to build a large factory in northern Beijing.
His company, Nuctech, is one of China’s leading producers of security inspection equipment.
“When we started building the factory in Miyun District in 1999, many people thought it was too large and wasteful. But now the company has developed very well and no one will question my decision,” he said.
Since its founding in 1997, Nuctech has expanded several times. Its Miyun factory, which covers an area of about 100,000 square meters, has become a large-scale export production base. It also has factories in Poland and Brazil.
At the Miyun plant, workers were testing several car scanners that were scheduled to be shipped to Mexico. The company plans to export about 20,000 of the inspection devices overseas in the coming months.
“Nuclear Vision’s products have been put into use in many ports and customs abroad,” Chen said, adding that in 2016, exports accounted for 60 percent of total sales.
Nuctech is one of the companies that has grown rapidly since the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed in 2013.
“If there was no Belt and Road Initiative, we would still go out and look for business opportunities, but since the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed, it has become much easier to do business,” said Mr Chen.
He added: “Our overseas partners are more willing to cooperate because they know they can also benefit greatly from it.”
Another Beijing company, OriginWater, was founded in 2001, four years later than Nuctech. Both companies originated in Zhongguancun, known as China’s Silicon Valley.
With its success in providing safe drinking water solutions in the country, OriginWater’s products have been sold to countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The nano-membrane filter developed by the company can block pollutants and purify water. Deputy manager He Yuanping said the technology has broad application prospects in water-scarce countries and regions.
“We are working hard in Oman to reach an agreement,” he said.
He said doing business abroad was still not easy.
“It is very important to understand the market, the legal system and the financial situation before we enter the market. We find it easier to work with Chinese companies that have already been successful in foreign markets,” he said.
“We will find more ways to take advantage of the opportunities brought by the Belt and Road Initiative,” he said.
“Chinese companies are developing rapidly, especially high-tech ones. Many are ready to create value and spread their technology,” said Zhang Xiaodong, president of the Zhongguancun Belt and Road Promotion Association.
MIUI, the mobile operating system developed by Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, has gathered a large number of fans.
“We get about 70,000 hits a day,” said Yevgeny Drozdov, who runs an online forum for MIUI in Russia.
Indonesian woman Santi started working at Xiaomi two years ago, answering questions from local Xiaomi users. “Many netizens actively help the forum translate between English, local dialect and Chinese,” she said.
According to Xiaomi, starting from 2017, all Xiaomi mobile phones sold in Indonesia will be locally produced.
Wang Yiwei, a professor at Renmin University of China, said: “The reason why Xiaomi has been able to grow so fast is because it has localized operations, production and consumption.”
“The Belt and Road Initiative spreads the concept of win-win cooperation and guides Chinese companies to find their place in the global division of labor and achieve common development,” Wang Yi said.
