I benefited a lot from this forum during my exam preparation and the enthusiastic period in 2015. In the following years, I thought about it from time to time. computer I graduated in engineering and have been working in a private company since then. In the year I chose it, the computer engineering department was ranked second, just behind the electrical and electronics engineering department. Over the years, following the trend in the country and around the world, the ranking has improved year by year and surpassed electrical and electronics engineering. Although I was happy about this, I was shocked when I saw the ranking of the computer engineering department this year and wanted to open the topic.

First of all, I want to say that I am very happy with my time at university and my current job. I carefully researched departments at the time and chose only Computer Engineering. I have always been happy with it, both in studies and in business life, and think I made the right choice. I am sure that there are people in similar situations among those who are reading this message now. If you have thoroughly researched the courses in various departments, are sure that other departments such as Medical or Electrical and Electronic Engineering will not satisfy you, and have spoken to graduates from different backgrounds and clarified your thoughts, then you can ignore the rest of this message. My intention of starting this subject is to reach out to those who are still undecided and one of the reasons for choosing Computer Engineering is that it is the most popular department currently.

Let’s come to the most important issue, “unfortunately” no computer engineering department deserves its current ranking, maybe it’s just because Kochi University always gets less number in these rankings. The current ranking is really shocking.

2014:

• METU previously received 4390 and now has 710
• ITU received 4580 before and now receives 1140
• Hacettepe was originally purchased for 23100, but can now be purchased for 3390.

Computer engineering is a very good major and we chose it that year. According to me It is valued less than it should be, and its rise today is inevitable, but these rankings Sorry More than you deserve. I believe the reasons for this rise are as follows:

• Being a doctor has become less attractive than it used to be, and before the latest improvements, salaries were starting to stay low.
• Students aim to go abroad after graduation, and there are more opportunities to go abroad for computer engineering than for other engineering and medicine (I still think this is the case, but it’s a lot less than before, I wrote about it in more detail below).
• Remote work opportunities have become common as the pandemic has spread, something that is not possible in other engineering fields
• More comfortable working conditions than doctors
• The industry is growing with the pandemic and rising wages
• It became more popular and its rankings rose as it became more popular and its rankings rose (a situation that one department in Turkey encountered in some years, which usually resulted in unhappy graduates).

I think that all of the above reasons, except the last one, are more or less true and logical.

• If you have decided that you definitely want to work remotely, our field is still the most likely and common place to work remotely, although it has obviously decreased compared to the pandemic. (As someone who has worked remotely for a long time and now works in an office, I do not recommend remote work, although it has its benefits and we can talk to those who are interested)
• If you say that being a doctor or a dentist is not for you, I don’t want to be so tired, I want to work in more comfortable conditions, then computer engineering is a reasonable choice.
• Let’s talk about salaries and going abroad, unfortunately the situation here is a bit depressing. Especially in 2021, under the influence of the epidemic, the opportunities abroad are incredible. Big US companies are hiring like crazy for their European offices, and almost every day I see someone starting a job in a European office of a good company on my LinkedIn page. With such hype, domestic salaries have also reached a very good point. But unfortunately, as US interest rates rose from nearly 0 to 5.5, these companies have drastically reduced their hiring, and many companies have even stopped hiring. At this point, the salary is not as attractive as before, but it is still pretty good. Although the gap has widened in recent years with the improvement of doctors, salary is not that important to me. If you say that earning less than doctors is not a problem and the working conditions are more comfortable, I think the salary is still good from the perspective of F/P.

Another unknown is artificial intelligence. It is difficult to predict how AI will affect the industry. However, based on the current rankings, if you are not sure you want computer engineering but choose it anyway, the chances of AI having a negative impact on the profession increase the risk you take.

My first suggestion would be to find current graduates (last two or three years) of the school you are considering on LinkedIn and look at their profiles. There are probably hundreds of people who graduated from that school and started working at large tech companies, but this will give a better idea of ​​what the ratio has been in recent years, and where those who didn’t keep up with the pandemic hype are working.

My second suggestion is to set your expectations after graduation. Above we have been talking about large foreign technology companies, and there are many graduates working there, but even if the industry is in the best state in the best schools, the employment rate of these companies will not reach 10%. If the current conditions do not change much, if you graduate from a top 10 school, you don’t need to spend too much time in school, and you can graduate with an average of 3 points.
