Australian Prime Minister Elia Asilaoa warmly welcomes Australia back to Malaita

Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency Rod Hilton, returned to Malaita today for a two-day visit and was warmly welcomed by Governor Elijah Asilawa and members of the Malaita Provincial Government Executive.

High Commissioner Hilton and the Asilawa Provincial Governor discussed the long-standing relationship between Australia and Malaita Province and pledged to continue working together on shared priorities, including improving jobs, economic growth and infrastructure in Solomon Islands’ most populous province.

High Commissioner Hilton said he was honoured to attend the celebrations of Malaita Province’s second Appointment Day and looked forward to celebrating the province’s achievements.

“Australia has been working with the Solomon Islands Government and the Malaita Provincial Government to identify opportunities to build a better future for Malaita,” High Commissioner Hilton said.

“Under the Solomon Islands-Australia partnership, we are building high-quality, sustainable infrastructure that brings jobs and supports economic growth in communities.”

“We thank you for your continued partnership with Australia.”

Prime Minister Asilawa said actions speak louder than words.

“Your presence here shows that you value the island of Malaita,” Prime Minister Asilawa said.

While in Malaita, High Commissioner Hilton will inspect the urgent rehabilitation of Malaita South Road, funded by S$11 million from Australia, hand over a multi-purpose community hall in Ambu, launch a new multi-year investment with the Baru Conservation Alliance, and sign partnership agreements with three local tourism operators.
