The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources in Western Bahr el Ghazal State revealed that to date, it has vaccinated more than 100,000 cattle and about 80,000 goats and sheep across the state to prevent a suspected anthrax outbreak.

The campaign, launched last month, is supported by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and managed by the country’s health and agriculture ministries.

The state’s Secretary of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Arkangelo Augustino Futur, said the massive event was in response to reports of an outbreak of a deadly disease that has killed many animals, especially in Juare River County.

“Our teams were sent to many places and they reported to us that an unknown disease was breaking out and killing animals,” he explained. “It started in January this year and I formed a committee led by the Ministry of Livestock to investigate cattle, goats and even birds. We submitted a report to the Ministry of Animal Resources and FAO in Juba.”

Minister Futour added: “Laboratory technicians in Juba, accompanied by a doctor, collected samples from 42 cattle here (Wau) and 40 from Raja, and so far the samples are at the national laboratory but the results are not out yet.”

He said the urgent response of the ministry and FAO was an ongoing vaccination campaign that began in July.

“So far, a total of 130,000 suspected anthrax vaccines have been administered in Raja, Jurhe and Wau counties,” he reported. “We have also given them cough and flu vaccines.”

Fortour advised the public not to panic as his department was working closely with the FAO to control the disease.
