Guadalajara (Mexico) – The Black Cat by American author Edgar Allan Poe is closer to the public than ever before, thanks to a stage show that revisits this classic story, offering an immersive experience that allows audiences to hear, feel and “touch” the environment.
Mónika Tovar, director and producer of the company “Teatro Freak”. “A story that keeps you awake”, told EFE on Saturday that the production, which will be presented this weekend in the city of Guadalajara, capital of the state of Jalisco (western Mexico), plays with the sensory capacities of the public through a special device to create the rich atmosphere created by Edgar Allan Poe in his 1843 story.
“It’s interesting because we can work with a narratively rich text in the atmosphere proposed by the author and, in my opinion, execute it in a sensory device that seeks to stimulate the audience’s imagination through olfactory, sensory and direct interactive stimulation,” explains the director.
The Black Cat is one of Edgar Allan Poe’s literary classics. This story appeals to psychological horror and tells how a man goes mad in front of his favorite pet cat, even gouging out its eyes and hanging it. The cat becomes a mysterious presence that torments his life until his wife is murdered.
The company uses a sensory device in the play, a mask that obscures the audience’s view in certain scenes, but the environment is supplemented by onstage sounds, lighting, aromas and narration by the actors.
In this way, the work can recreate the atmosphere of a tavern or an old house, the sounds of the street or the slow, grunting movements of Pluto, the story’s protagonist.
“Even if we cover our eyes, our cerebral hemispheres are always alert, they automatically detect if there is light, if it is warm, if it is cold, if there is someone nearby, which helps us make it an immersive proposal, that is, it immerses us in history,” Tovar explains.
The director hopes that this offer will attract new audiences who are not only interested in Poe’s black literature but also go to the theater regularly.
The show has been performed in Puebla and Coahuila, and briefly in Guadalajara. Tovar said they are waiting to confirm a new space so they can continue touring in the coming months.
