The revolution of 2011 was a landmark moment! The era of liberation and freedom allowed to launch many reform projects. It was a fertile, intense, sometimes risky, but brilliant boiling period! Wahid Ferchichi considered the revolution to be the long-awaited opportunity for him and his entire generation!
Since 2011, Wahid Ferchichi’s commitment to public life has become clear and open:
• Participation in the creation of the Anti-Corruption Authority: In January 2011, Wahid Ferchichi joined as a member of the National Authority against Corruption and Embezzlement, chaired by the late Abdelfattah Amor, which enabled him to contribute to the preparation of the first report on the fight against corruption and embezzlement in Tunisia, and participated, within the framework of a special committee of the body, in the drafting of the decree on the framework law against corruption and the establishment of a national anti-corruption authority, a text adopted on November 14, 2011, and the authority thus created is still in operation today (June 2020);
• Creation of Adli: Also in January 2011, Wahid Ferchichi initiated with a group of friends a reflection on the search for different forms of associative activism with added value in terms of human rights, which led to the creation of the Tunisian association Defending individual freedoms (Adli), a theme previously considered by human rights defenders themselves as one with a poor relationship to human rights: the events of 2011 to date have confirmed this choice and agreed with Adli, legally active since March 2011;
• Contribution to the establishment of a transitional justice system: In February-March 2011, Wahid Ferchichi initiated with different components of civil society (activists and experts) a reflection on the management of the legacy of the dictatorship! On February 22, 2011, the Kawakibi Center for Democratic Transition organized the first conference on this theme, and the idea of transitional justice began to germinate, giving rise to a large transitional justice movement in Tunisia, among which Wahid Ferchichi was one. One of the instigators and co-founder of the Independent National Coordination for Transitional Justice (Cnijt), chaired by the late master Amor Safraoui, he played an important role in the development of specific legislation and later in the opposition (2015-2016) the National Reconciliation Law proposed by the late President Caid Essebsi.
In this context, Wahid Ferchichi was the main author of the draft law on transitional justice between May and November 2012, the text of which was subsequently adopted on December 24, 2013;
• Learning to cohabit: From December 2011 to December 2013, during the drafting of the Constitution, Wahid Ferchichi had the opportunity to learn how to lead difficult debates, how to communicate with ideological opponents, how to give advice, persuade and build bonds of friendship and respect with representatives of all political, trade union and coalition factions. An activist for the rights of victims of the dictatorship (the sum of all victims), Wahid Ferchichi has created the image of a fair-minded, non-dogmatic person and, most importantly, sensitive to the vulnerability and suffering of everyone, regardless of their convictions, including and especially those who do not believe in or understand the importance of human rights;
• Wahid Ferchichi was the one who drafted the Tunisian Convention on Rights and Freedoms, a proposal drawn up by a special committee of Iadh, which provided him with an opportunity to tour all the political parties represented in the African National Congress (ANC) at the time and solicit their commitments, as well as present the work to the ANC Commission on Rights and Freedoms, Wahid Ferchichi was very proud to see his proposal to include individual freedoms in the constitutional text adopted and enshrined (Article 21 of the Constitution);
• Participate in all demonstrations for a civil constitution that respects gender equality and advocates for dignity, equality and freedom. In this context, Wahid Ferchichi presented the Civil Society Declaration during the First Civil Society Conference (Mahdia, July 2012) and represented Tunisian civil society at the Community of Democratic States (Villinus, 2012). The adoption of the Constitution and the preparations for the 2014 elections were also the focus of Wahid Ferchichi’s activities and advocacy work;
• Participated in drafting the bill on violence against women: Wahid Ferchichi was the only man in the drafting team of the bill, which was eventually passed on August 11, 2017.
