Recently, a ceremony to award the 2024/2025 Chinese Government Scholarship to Sri Lankan students was held at the Chinese Embassy in Colombo.
The event was held on August 16 and was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, Sri Lankan Education Minister Sushil Premajayanta, and officials from the Ministry of Education and the Embassy’s Cultural Section.
According to the Chinese Embassy, a total of 30 Sri Lankan students received scholarships this year, covering major disciplines such as liberal arts, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, education, management, economics, law, philosophy, and sociology.
All students receive full scholarships, including tuition (research fees), insurance, basic textbooks, accommodation, living expenses, a one-time resettlement subsidy, and a one-time inter-city transportation fee.
Addressing the event, the Chinese ambassador told the students that Chinese government scholarships are an important link to strengthen exchanges between the young people of the two countries.
“Since its establishment in 1975, this scholarship has sponsored nearly 4,000 Sri Lankan friends to study in China. In recent years, in addition to this scholarship, China has also provided more and more medium- and short-term training programs for Sri Lankan students. Currently, more than 1,200 Sri Lankan students go to China to study each year with full scholarships, one-time scholarships and short-term training. We are pleased to see that the number of scholarship applicants is increasing, the program is becoming more and more popular, and many returning international students have become backbone talents in all walks of life in Sri Lanka. At the same time, more and more Chinese students come to Sri Lanka for further studies, and exchanges between the younger generation are constantly promoting the development of friendship between the two countries.” He said.
In his speech, Education Minister Prema Jayantha thanked the Chinese Embassy for providing scholarships to Sri Lanka and reviewed China’s continued contribution to Sri Lanka’s education in recent years.
