Russian missiles spark fires in Ukrainian city – Puerto Rico Metro

A Russian missile attack set the Ukrainian city of Sumy on fire on Saturday as Ukrainian troops continued to advance towards the Kursk region on the Russian border.

The Sumy attack, which used Iskander-K cruise missiles and aerial bombs, injured two people and damaged nearby cars and buildings, Ukraine’s state emergency services reported.

The Ukrainian air force also reported shooting down 14 Russian drones during the night, including some over the Kiev area.

Meanwhile, fighting continues in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops have been deployed since August 6 in an attempt to divert the Kremlin’s military attention from the Ukrainian front.

Alexander Kotz, a military reporter for the pro-Kremlin Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, said Ukrainian pressure on Kursk “has not yet eased”.

“In the main areas that tore the front line apart, the situation has stabilized. But in some areas, the enemy continues to try to expand its bridgehead,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

Ukraine destroyed a bridge over the Seim River in the Glushkovsky region with U.S.-made HIMARS rockets, the first time they have been used in the Kursk region, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday.

Zakharova’s claim could not be independently confirmed, although the Washington-based think tank the Institute for the Study of War said geolocated images released on August 16 showed the bridge had collapsed following the stroke.

Russian military bloggers said destroying the bridge would prevent the delivery of supplies to Russian troops but would not completely cut off supplies.

“No one is canceling the floating bridge,” Coates said, stressing that the Seym is smaller than Ukrainian waterways such as the Dnieper. “There are smaller bridges.”

Russia has invaded its territory before during the war, but the Kursk invasion stood out for its size, speed, the involvement of battle-hardened Ukrainian brigades and the length of time they remained inside Russia. Western military analysts say as many as 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers were involved.
