August 16, 2024 (Khartoum) – Four detainees on Tuti Island in Khartoum have died in the custody of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a member of the resistance committee told Sudan Tribune on Friday.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deaths occurred in May and were revealed to the family by a recently released detainee.

In April, the RSF arrested several residents of Tuti following protests over the alleged rape of a girl by an RSF member. During Eid prayers, residents asked the RSF to leave the island, but the paramilitary group responded with shootings and arrests.

Tuti Island is located in the heart of Greater Khartoum, where the White Nile and the Blue Nile join to form the mighty Nile. The island is surrounded by the “Triangle Capital” of Khartoum, Omdurman and Khartoum Bahri.

The RSF has occupied Tuti Island since the conflict broke out in April 2023, effectively turning it into a military base and preventing residents from leaving. About three weeks ago, the RSF allowed hundreds of families to evacuate in exchange for large sums of money.

The fate of many other Tuti Island detainees remains unclear, with RSF leaders refusing to provide information or allow them to meet with their families. Some detainees have reportedly been transferred to Sobha prison, while others are being held in detention centers in Riyadh and the Al-Souq Al-Arabi neighborhood.
