Mexico City (apro) – Authorities in Atascosa County, Texas, have begun an investigation into the mother and stepfather of a minor who caused serious harm to them through neglect.

According to a post from Sheriff David Soward, 911 operators received a call requesting medical assistance for the minor on the evening of Aug. 12 while she was traveling south on Highway 16 in her mother’s vehicle, where she was met by emergency medical services.

The victim was unconscious but alive and was taken to Atascosa Methodist Hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he died.

Sheriff’s deputies began investigating the circumstances of the girl’s injuries and determined she suffered serious, life-threatening injuries on Thursday, Aug. 8, but her parents did not seek medical assistance despite her being mentally and physically incapacitated and unresponsive.

“He didn’t speak. For four days, he could basically blink his eyes and move his hands a little bit,” Thorward said at a news conference. “They had her lying on a pallet in the house,” he explained.

“They tried to give him a milkshake, but an unconscious person couldn’t swallow,” Soward added.

The sheriff revealed that the mother supposedly called 911 only when the minor began to have trouble breathing.

Soval also announced that the mother, Denise Balbaneda, 36, and stepfather, Gerald González, 40, were arrested and charged in a complaint filed with Magistrate Judge Rusty Prasifka on Aug. 13. The couple was booked into the Atascosa County Jail.

Currently, the investigation into the little girl’s injuries is still ongoing. As of press time, the final autopsy report has not yet been issued.
