BAIDOA (HOL) — Somali troops have launched an offensive against al-Shabaab militants in the Bakool region, targeting a strategic road long controlled by the insurgents as part of a campaign to retake key territory in southwestern Somalia.
The operation, led by the 9th Battalion of the 60th Division, focused on the road connecting Hudur and Kura Chomé. This route was heavily guarded by Al-Shabaab, which used it to control the area and tax the locals.
Lieutenant Colonel Elmi Adan Isak, commander of the 9th Battalion, reported that government forces had successfully dismantled several Al-Shabaab checkpoints and captured several positions along the route. “By clearing this road, we have disrupted Al-Shabaab’s operations and restored a vital lifeline for the locals,” Isak said.
While the exact number of casualties is unclear, local sources said the increased military presence has given residents a sense of security.
