BERLIN — Bayern Munich easily beat second-tier Ulm 4-0 in the German Cup on Friday, but three other Bundesliga teams all needed overtime or penalty shootouts to beat lower-tier teams and narrowly avoided elimination.

Thomas Muller scored twice for Bayern inside the first 15 minutes before Kingsley Coman and substitute Harry Kane added two more late on to give new coach Vincent Kompany victory in his first competitive match in charge.

But Hoffenheim, St. Pauli and Mainz will all have to work harder before advancing to the next round.

Hoffenheim struggled the most against third-tier Würzburger Kickers.

Hoffenheim fell behind after 11 minutes, but an own goal eight minutes later sent the game into extra time. Würzburg took the lead again after a goal in the 100th minute, but Marius Bult equalized for Hoffenheim in the 107th minute, sending the game into a penalty shootout.

Würzburg captain Dominik Messer was the only player to miss a penalty, as Hoffenheim ultimately won the shootout 5-3.

Fourth-tier side Halleschel were just seconds away from humiliating last season’s second-tier champions St. Pauli.

Hallesher led 2-1 until Adam Dzvigara equalized in the 94th minute. Substitute Lars Ritzka scored the winning goal for Hamburg in the 110th minute, giving the club a 3-2 win.

Mainz trailed 1-0 against third-tier Wiesbaden before winning 3-1 thanks to extra-time goals from captain Jonathan Burkart and midfielder Nadim Amiri.
