South Korea Dags B. Eggertsson’s assistant was reportedly paid $6 million for missed vacations and back pay when he left the company in January. The employee had been an assistant for 12 months.
The assistant, Dilja Ragnarsdóttir, started working in January 2023, and a year later, Dagur left when she accepted the appointment. Thus, she worked for 12 months and enjoyed three months of waiting salary, which, together with salary-related expenses, amounted to nearly six million. Subsequently, she received a salary of 1,574 thousand dollars from unpaid leave.
Mayor Einar Þorsteinsson discussed the issue with Spursmál and was asked if it was normal to replace an employee with a lump sum payment of $6 million after 12 months.
“If it was done according to the rules and the law, I would have no chance to step in,” Einar said, noting that he has been mayor for seven months now and that citizens may be more interested in hearing him answer difficult questions about his job than asking him about the job of his former mayor, who said “Dagur B. Eggertsson is no longer mayor.”
However, journalist Stefán Einar Stefánsson does not let Einar get away with this answer easily. Now that he is mayor, the city treasury is not in the best position. Therefore, citizens naturally think about the reconciliation with the former mayor and his assistants, and whether other employees can expect similar settlements when they retire.
“I’m not going to sit here and put myself in the position of defending a program that I never mentioned. The mayor has no role in calculating vacation time for all employees of the city. It’s not his job…”
Stefán is still waiting for a response and finally told Einar that he had received information about this settlement from the Human Resources department and had no comment on it.
“It is not clear that this goes against the generally followed practice based on collective bargaining rights. The amount is high, the mayor’s salary is high, and there are many vacations. Of course, it does not look good. 10 million? This is a large amount.”
