During the opening session, speakers stressed the importance of human dignity, safety and reintegration within the detention system. “JICN is a sophisticated institution that operates on the principles of relational safety and procedural fairness,” said Toon Molleman, Plv. Director of the Prisons and Immigration Detention Division. “We want to achieve more than just retaliation.”

The new unit is specially designed to meet modern detention needs. It provides adequate living space, good sanitation, ventilation and access to outside air. Adequate medical care and psychological guidance are also provided. All of this contributes to a safe and humane detention environment.

The efforts of many stakeholders, both local and from the European part of the Netherlands, have made this progress possible. “This is a real milestone,” said State Secretary Eric van der Berg. “I pay tribute to everyone who contributed to this new facility.”

The opening of the unit underscores Bonaire’s continued commitment to treating foreign nationals in a humane and fair manner.
