Luis Abinader will deliver his inaugural address on August 16, 2024
SANTO DOMINGO, August 16 – Luis Abinader took office this Friday as President of the Dominican Republic for a second and final four-year term in the presence of a dozen heads of state and government, including the King of Spain.
“I swear before God and the people to uphold and execute, for the sake of the country and my honor, the Constitution and laws of the republic, to protect and defend its independence, to respect the rights and freedoms of its citizens and to faithfully perform the duties of my office,” Abinader, a 57-year-old professional economist, said before receiving the presidential sash from Senate President Ricardo de los Santos.
Next, her vice president was sworn in, also 57-year-old academic and business administrator Raquel Peña, who will continue in her role from 2024 to 2028.
Abinader then began his speech and thanked everyone present.
Humility, Pride and Commitment
“It is with humility, pride and devotion that I take up for a second time the sacred responsibility entrusted to me by the Dominican people. I am deeply honored to take the oath, following an exemplary electoral process in which Dominicans freely expressed their will and demonstrated once again the democratic maturity we have achieved as a nation,” the president said of his broad victory. His Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) won the May 19 legislative and presidential elections.
In his speech, Abinader stressed the “stability and health” of Dominican democracy, as well as the “economic dynamism and great opportunities for business and investment here.”
The ceremony was held at the National Theater of Santo Domingo, rather than the National Congress as is customary, in order to accommodate the large number of guests attending the event.
VIP Attendance
More than a dozen heads of state and/or government attended Abinader’s inauguration, including King Felipe VI of Spain and President Bernardo Arévalo of Guatemala; José Raúl Mulino of Panama; Santiago Pena of Paraguay; Luis Lacalle Pou of Uruguay; Xiomara Castro of Honduras; Chandrikapersad Santokhi of Suriname; and Vice President Félix Ulloa of El Salvador.
Members of the Abinad government will also be sworn in on this day.
Will deepen freedom
Abinader announced that he will spend the next four years deepening freedom and social justice to achieve a prosperous future
He said he was struck by the swearing-in of a new government after an exemplary electoral process in which Dominicans freely expressed their will and once again demonstrated the democratic maturity they have achieved as a country.
“I will be everyone’s president”
“I thank the people for the great trust they have placed in me and I want to tell them that I will be the president of every Dominican without distinction. My position requires me to do so and my principles impose on me,” he said.
He believed that the true strength of a nation lies in the men and women who make it up, and that each has the potential to contribute to the betterment of the nation through participation and civic commitment, thereby bringing about real change.
He stressed that a government’s true victory lies not in gaining power, but in using this power to serve the people and solve their practical problems.
Democratic Mission
“This government is the result of a democratic mandate and since its inception has resolutely fought for the correct use of public funds, which is incompatible with corruption. I want to emphasize that we will deepen our actions to prevent corruption and increase transparency to continue protecting people’s money.”
He recalled that four years ago he had proposed governance through dialogue, open to all and promoting the independence and autonomy of the different powers of the country.
He stressed that respect for the rule of law was one of the strongest promises he made to Dominicans when he assumed the presidency in 2020. “I made them a promise and I kept it.”
