Four of the five largest airports in the Netherlands saw an increase in passenger traffic in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Air passenger traffic totalled 20.1 million, compared to 19 million in the same period last year. The only airport with almost no change in passenger traffic was Groningen Eelde Airport.
Schiphol Airport handles 87% of flights to and from the Netherlands
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol accounted for 87% of all flights and passengers to and from the Netherlands in the second quarter of 2024. The number of flights increased to 122,000 in the second quarter of 2024, an increase of more than 6% compared to the same period last year. The number of air passengers also increased by more than 6% to 17.4 million during the same period.
Although there were more than 100 fewer flights to and from Rotterdam The Hague Airport compared to the same period last year (down 2.2%), passenger traffic increased by 1.4% to 633,000.
In the second quarter of 2024, nearly 67,000 passengers passed through Maastricht Aachen Airport. In the same period last year, the figure was 19,000, as the runway was closed for upgrading works between 8 May and 30 June 2023. This can be seen in the number of flights: in the second quarter of 2024, there were 12,000 flights to and from Maastricht, compared to 386 in the same period of 2023.

Deliver more air cargo
Following a decline in 2023, air cargo volumes to and from the Netherlands recovered in the second quarter of 2024. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Maastricht Aachen Airport, the only two airports in the Netherlands that handle cargo, handled a total of 372,000 tonnes of cargo in the second quarter of 2024. This is an increase of 7.1% compared to the same period in 2023. Schiphol Airport handles nearly 97% of total air cargo volume.

In the second quarter of 2024, more than 198,000 tonnes of cargo were transported by air between Asia and the Netherlands (53% of the total). Of this, 75,000 tonnes were transported by air between China and the Netherlands, and 32,000 tonnes were transported by air between the UAE and the Netherlands. After Asia, North America is the Netherlands’ largest air trade partner: 63,000 tonnes in the second quarter of 2024. In the second quarter of 2024, nearly 55,000 tonnes of cargo were transported by air between the United States and the Netherlands.
Within Europe, the largest volume of air freight was sent to and from Turkey (13,000 tonnes), while within the EU it was sent to Germany with 7,000 tonnes. This is similar to previous years.
