The U.S. Geological Survey is currently soliciting proposals for its FY 2025 Geological Data Preservation Grant Program and is authorized to award up to $4 million. Grants from the USGS National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program are designed to enhance preservation of and access to geoscience collections, strengthen the digital and physical infrastructure that stores and services these collections, and modernize valuable data resources for reuse.
Administered by the U.S. Geological Survey, the program provides financial and technical assistance opportunities to bureaus within the Department of the Interior and state geological surveys that preserve geologic and geophysical data and samples.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act expands the program’s capacity to support preservation activities of physical samples and geoscience assets for future use, informing new scientific discoveries, hazard mitigation, infrastructure development, critical mineral characterization, and climate resilience.
The program places a high priority on increasing access to conservation materials.Resh Kaurthe Scientific Collections Registry centrally accesses and manages these materials through maps and inventories to explore these national assets. Preserved physical materials and digital data are catalogued so they can be readily reused in new research.
