MOGADISHU (HOL) — Hirshabelle State Governor Ali Abdullahi Hussein Guudlawe on Thursday convened an emergency meeting to discuss relief efforts to aid merchants and residents affected by the recent fire that destroyed the main market in Jowhar, the state capital.
The meeting was held at the Hirshabelle regional headquarters and was attended by Vice President Yusuf Dabaged, Chairman of the Somalia Disaster Management Authority Mohamed Muallem Abdul, regional ministers, members of the Jowhar regional council and a number of businessmen who suffered heavy losses in the disaster.
Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Trade and Ministry of Relief and the Johar Business Council presented the damage assessment and the ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire at the Khantywadag market earlier this week, which destroyed a large area and caused heavy losses, leaving many traders in financial distress.
SoDMA chairman Mohamud Abdulle stressed the agency’s commitment to coordinating comprehensive relief efforts. “Our goal is to gather detailed information about the disaster and work with the federal government, cabinet ministers and international organizations to provide substantial assistance to those affected,” Abdulle said.
President Goudreau called on the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali Chamber of Commerce to provide immediate assistance. “Traders and residents who have lost their livelihoods are now homeless and in urgent need of assistance. We are committed to providing emergency relief, but the scale of the disaster requires national and international support,” he said.
The fire at Jowhar’s main market is the latest in a series of challenges facing the region, which has been grappling with the compounding effects of ongoing conflict and climate-related shocks. The market is a key economic hub for the town and the fire is expected to have long-term impacts on the local economy and the livelihoods of thousands of residents.
The Somalia Disaster Management Authority and the HirShabelle government have called for urgent humanitarian assistance to help affected people rebuild their lives and businesses.
