Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella has been banned indefinitely for a doping violation, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board has confirmed.
It is understood that Dickwella failed a doping test in accordance with World Anti-Doping Guidelines during the recently concluded Sri Lanka Premier League and will be banned from all forms of cricket pending further investigation.
“The suspension is effective immediately and until further notice,” the SLC said in a news release.
“The test was conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) during the 2024 Sri Lanka Professional eSports Premier League (LPL) as part of the SLC’s ongoing commitment to upholding the integrity of the sport.
“This initiative, implemented in partnership with the Sports Ministry, is in line with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines and is aimed at ensuring that cricket remains free from the influence of banned substances.
“The SLC works with the Ministry of Sports and SLADA to conduct these tests randomly during domestic competitions to protect the sport from anti-doping violations.”
The 31-year-old, who captained Galle Miracles in the 2024 LPL, last played for the national team in March 2023, but was called up for Sri Lanka’s T20I series against Bangladesh earlier this year. He did not play a single match.
After his inclusion, the selectors hinted that they had spoken to Dickwella about his poor disciplinary record. The left-handed batsman has been mired in controversy throughout his career, with his off-field lifestyle a focus of criticism due to his often erratic performances. Most notably, he was one of three players banned in 2021 for violating bio-bubble protocols, along with Kusal Mendis and Dhanushka Gunathilake.
Dickwella has played wicket for Sri Lanka in all formats, scoring 2,757 runs in Tests, 1,604 runs in One-Day Internationals and 480 runs in T20 Internationals. (ESPN Cricinfo)
