The inaugural Oceania Football Confederation Women’s Futsal Nations Cup kicks off this weekend in the Solomon Islands.
The Solomon Islands has a long history in men’s futsal, so it is only fitting that the country hosts the tournament.
The Solomon Islands have won the Oceania Football Confederation Men’s Futsal Nations Cup six times and have also participated in four FIFA Futsal World Cups.
Fiji, coached by former Solomon Islands futsal national team player Jerry Sam, will face Tahiti in their opener on Saturday evening.
Sam, who currently oversees Fiji’s futsal and beach soccer programmes, stressed the importance of the tournament for the development of women’s football in the region.
“It is so important that the OFC has blazed this trail for women’s futsal. This is the first ever Women’s Futsal Nations Cup and it is a step forward that should continue to inspire more women to join the futsal family,” said Sam.
Fiji will play Tahiti tomorrow at 6pm.
