Ruth Hwara’s funeral in Kuwadzana

Ruth Hwara dies in financial scandal involving more than $100,000 in missing funds.

Reporter | ZimEye | The death of kidney patient Ruth Hwara, at the centre of a controversial GoFundMe campaign, comes weeks after her family failed to provide key financial documents, including bank and Mukuru remittance slips, raising serious concerns about the whereabouts of more than $100,000 that was supposed to fund her life-saving surgery in India.

Ruth Huala’s story has captured the attention of the Zimbabwean community and the wider diaspora, but has now come to a sad end, overshadowed by a scandal involving the misuse of funds. For over a year, a GoFundMe campaign raised a significant amount of money with the express purpose of paying for Ruth to undergo kidney surgery in India. However, despite the huge sums raised, Ruth was never flown to India for the surgery that could have saved her life.

ZimEye, which has been investigating the matter for months, has repeatedly asked Ruth’s family to disclose how the funds were used. These requests include asking for bank statements and Mukuru transfer receipts to explain how the funds were managed and why they were not used for Ruth’s treatment.

Unfortunately, these documents were never provided. The family’s failure to produce any financial records only deepened suspicions that the donations were misappropriated and mismanaged. The absence of these important documents leaves many unanswered questions about how the money was spent and whether Ruth had the opportunity to receive the treatment she desperately needed.

In the weeks leading up to Ruth’s death, her condition deteriorated rapidly. Despite the availability of large sums of money, there is no evidence that much of it was used to improve her medical condition or secure her passage to India. Instead, the funds appear to have disappeared, with no clear explanation or accountability from those responsible for managing the operation.

The lack of transparency has sparked anger among GoFundMe campaign donors, with many feeling deceived and betrayed. Speaking to ZimEye, one donor expressed their frustration: “We donated money to save lives, but all we get is sadness and unanswered questions. It’s inexcusable that Ruth didn’t even make it to India. We demand to know where our money went.”

As investigations continue, focus will be on uncovering the truth behind the missing funds. ZimEye remains committed to holding those responsible to account and ensuring the truth about what happened to Ruth Hwara and the funds raised in her name is made public.

Ruth’s death marked the end of a tragic story that should have been about hope and healing. Instead, it became a cautionary tale about the dangers of financial mismanagement and the critical importance of transparency in charitable activities. The Zimbabwean community mourns Ruth’s passing and continues to seek justice for her and for the donors who placed their trust in a campaign that ultimately failed to deliver on its promises.
