(TMI) – Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Mohd Azmah Wifikri Abdul Ghani is at a disadvantage in the Nenggi state by-election, Umno stalwart Tengku Razaleigh Hamidi said 48 hours before polling day.
Tengku Razaleigh, also known as Ku Li, said although the by-election was being held in his home turf, which he has dominated for the past 50 years, voters tended to support the incumbent Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Kouri served as the MP for Gua Musang from 1974 to 2022. During this period, he was considered a suitable candidate to be the prime minister.
PN is fielding Rizwadi Ismail, the former PAS Youth chief in Gua Musang, as a Bersatu member to contest the election.
“This is an important by-election because we have been tasked with stopping the PAS green wave that has swept across the Malay belt states in the past two years,” said Tengku Razaleigh.
He told The Malaysian Insight that Barisan Nasional, through its Umno Youth wing, was trying to stem the tide around race and religion, but admitted it was an uphill battle.
“We must confront the distrust among the Malays towards the National Unity Government. This distrust is further exacerbated by the government’s difficulties in controlling the cost of living and the bleak prospects at the grassroots. We need a more proactive stance from the government to dispel misunderstandings.”
Khoury, 87, advised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on how to stimulate the economy to help the country weather uncertain global economic conditions.
“Uniting forces requires resisting policies such as extremism and tolerance of corruption, which tend to undermine the economy rather than promote it.”
Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan and vice-president Johari Abdul Ghani are contesting in the by-election.
More than 20,000 voters will vote on Saturday, 85% of whom are Malay Muslims, while the rest are indigenous people, Chinese, Indians, etc.
The constituency is largely semi-rural with many Felda, Kesedar and Orang Asli settlements in and around Gua Musang town.
The main economic activities in the constituency are plantations, logging and agriculture.
