Around 3 a.m., a fairly strong earthquake struck the southeast side of the Bajabunga crater. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the magnitude of the earthquake was 3.5, but the last earthquake of this magnitude occurred on June 30.
Minney Sigurðardóttir, a natural disaster expert at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, said there were several smaller earthquakes afterwards but no signs of unrest.
Bárðarbunga earthquakes are common, and 15 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or above have been recorded in these areas since the beginning of the year. The largest, with a magnitude of 5.4, was recorded on April 21.
