British singer Sam Smith headlined the annual summer psychedelic festival at Ta’ Qali on Thursday with a bang.
Smith’s performance was electrifying and had the crowd singing and dancing along all night long as he took the crowd through their musical career, from the softer ballads on their first album to their more intense dance music of late, getting everyone dancing along.
With a stage set depicting the figure of a woman lying asleep and spray-painted with slogans such as “Liberation,” “Autonomy,” “Revolution,” “Ceasefire Now,” and “Protect Trans Children,” Smith took the stage to a spectacular light show and dancers holding red torches.
When Smith walked down the small staircase in high heels, with a big smile on his face, an elegant Vivienne Westwood pearl earring hanging on his earlobe, and a pair of elegant glasses on his long beard, he immediately attracted everyone’s attention. The audience burst into crazy cheers.
Smith opened the show with familiar songs from their early career, including Stay with me, I’m not the only one and Just like I canpausing briefly in the performance to allow the audience to sing Happy Birthday to the band’s bassist Julia.

The festival is being organised by the music industry in partnership with Universal Music Group, BBC Radio 1 Dance Anthems and Creamfields, with Shaun Farrugia also performing on Thursday.
Events will continue throughout the rest of the week with a Vida Loca event at Uno Malta on Friday, a BBC Radio 1 live show at Uno Malta on Saturday and a finale with performances from Kungs and Danny Howard at Cafe Del Mar on Sunday night.
