The Malaita Provincial Government held an official event in Oki today to mark the 41st Second Appointment Day anniversary in the province.

The event, themed “Empowering our diversity through unity for a brighter and inclusive future”, was attended by Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, government dignitaries and development partners.

Prime Minister Manele, in his keynote address, commended the province’s contribution to nation building.

“I wish all Malaitans and friends of Malaitan a joyous and peaceful Second Appointment Day. I want to thank the province of Malaitan for its contribution in our nation building. Malaitan has been involved in building the country we love long before we gained independence.”

“Malita is known for its hard-working people. It has produced prime ministers, governors-general, speakers of parliament, judges, academics and many other talents,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malaita Governor Elijah Asilawa said the day was celebrated to reflect on past challenges in order to work towards a better future.

“We come together to celebrate an important milestone in Malaita’s history. It is an important opportunity for us to reflect on the past and look forward to a better future.

“Over the past 41 years, we have witnessed both great achievements and daunting challenges. Today, it is time for our fellow Malaitans to learn from our strengths and weaknesses and continue to shape our path to prosperity together.”

The second Designated Day marked the establishment of the Local Provincial Government of Malaita Province on 15 August 1983.
