On Wednesday, a 12-year-old boy, Obiala Cyprian Oyo, was killed when he was struck by lightning at the football field of Christ Light Academy in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State.

Regional chief Michael Obusuk told Radio Tamazuj that the boy climbed the tree while his colleagues were playing football.

Chief Obusuk said the incident occurred around 4 p.m.

Mayor Mustafa Albino Zakaria confirmed the incident and urged local residents to install lightning arresters on their homes to minimize the possibility of tragedy.

The mayor denied claims that lightning struck people wearing red and said it was a natural phenomenon.

Last year, a similar incident occurred in Shrikat Zone III, Torit town, resulting in the death of an SSPDF soldier.
