Dubai: The Gulf

Al Jalila Foundation, which leads the endowment arm of Health Dubai, the emirate’s first integrated academic health system, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Positive Zero, a leading provider of sustainable and decentralized energy infrastructure in the Middle East, to collaborate in areas such as reducing carbon emissions and energy costs. The move reflects the company’s commitment to achieving the goals of the Dubai Strategy and the UAE Climate Neutral Strategy 2050.

The MoU, which provides “Carbon Reduction Solutions as a Service”, was signed at an official ceremony at the Al Jalila Foundation in the presence of representatives from both parties. It is the first such initiative in the UAE healthcare sector. It covers all aspects of clean energy, including on-site power generation, promoting energy efficiency and clean transportation.

The partnership includes the development and implementation of a five-year plan to achieve sustainability, which will work to identify the best ways to reduce carbon emissions in the organization’s facilities, by providing fully funded solutions that aim to reduce operating costs by up to 50% and reduce carbon emissions by 70%. Positive Zero will study current procedures, increase efficiency and improve energy consumption through a “Cooling as a Service” model, which relies on providing effective cooling services at a lower cost, in addition to providing sustainable transportation solutions, as well as the provision of electric vehicle charging infrastructure at the headquarters by the Al Jalila Foundation.

This move is in line with efforts to improve and increase the efficiency of energy consumption in the public and private sectors within the framework of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. The agreement follows the success of the Al Jalila Foundation pilot program, which included the installation of solar power systems on the rooftops of Al Jalila Foundation’s ancillary buildings and parking lots, implemented by Positive Zero’s subsidiary Siraj Power, which specializes in solar power generation and distribution. The systems were successfully commissioned in December 2023 and are currently managed and maintained through a 20-year solar lease agreement, helping to reduce carbon emissions by more than 3,100 tons per year.

Dr. Amer Al Zarouni, Executive Director of the Foundation, said: “Al Jalila Foundation was one of the first non-profit organizations in the region to take serious steps towards sustainability, thanks to the new energy systems installed in the region. Through the Foundation’s facilities, we have managed to strengthen our presence in the clean energy sector and witnessed a significant drop in the cost of electrical energy. Today, we are working with Positive Zero on a long-term plan to reduce carbon emissions, which will achieve more sustainable and economical outcomes. We look forward to continuing our partnership under the umbrella of Healthy Dubai and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.”

David Urey, co-founder and CEO of Positive Zero, said: “Our first project with the Al Jalila Foundation proves that generating electricity with distributed solar power with no down payment can deliver significant cost savings in the shortest possible time and reduce carbon emissions. By implementing energy efficiency and clean transport solutions, the organization will be able to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and support the country’s vision of achieving zero emissions.”

Positive Zero will continue to work closely with the Al Jalila Foundation to explore effective ways to drive greater energy savings and achieve additional benefits through its integrated platform and Carbon Reduction-as-a-Service solution.
