There is sweat on his forehead. Administrator Imco Remijn (49) is working hard for the start of the new school year. Next Monday, around 1,500 students will take to the starting line at the 2College Durendael in Oisterwijk. “My heart beats faster when the students come back,” he smiles proudly.

Window cleaners, scrap metal farmers and teachers: they were literally lining up in front of Imco on Thursday morning. “These are very busy times,” said the enthusiastic concierge between the two companies.

“This job is so underrated.” Imco’s to-do list is long: finishing renovations, keeping all the pipes flowing, preparing classrooms, piles of photocopying work, etc. “I’ll turn the air conditioning back on,” he called from the school’s rooftop.

“I’ll welcome the students here later,” he said at the entrance. Are they really grumpy after an unseasonably warm summer break? “No, they’re actually happy to be back. Especially after such a long break. That’s really the truth,” he said as reporters looked at him in disbelief. “Otherwise I’m just cheering them up,” he said with a grin. “Welcome back!”, he mimicked his joyful welcome.

Gift
Of course, there are always some annoying students. “I had a lot of conflicts with someone. At the end of the school year, I suddenly got a spark.” The student said, “Thank you for your help. That’s great!”, he said with a smile thinking of the change in the student’s attitude. “Sometimes I can be strict, and that’s what I have to do.”

“See, those teachers left this to us,” Imco says with a smile, looking over a pile of messy folders. Imco picked up Cleaning Tools about 4.5 years ago. Before that, he was a project manager for an interior architecture firm. He doesn’t regret his career change for a single day. “No day is the same, and that’s what makes it so beautiful.”

“I really can’t wait,” Imko said enthusiastically. “The students are the soul of the school. I have a very good relationship with them. After the holidays, they are full of stories again.”
