The Burkina Faso government is taking a decisive step in its national energy strategy. A decree was recently adopted by the Council of Ministers chaired by Capt. according to Jean Emmanuel OuedraogoA spokesman for the government minister said the move was part of the head of state’s ambitious vision, which had three objectives: guaranteeing the country’s energy independence, promoting industrialization and improving electricity supply throughout the country.
The creation of the institution was accompanied by a major project: the construction of a nuclear power plant. With this in mind, Burkina Faso has recently stepped up its cooperation with Russia. Last June, Ouagadougou and Moscow signed three memorandums of understanding that set a roadmap for the construction of this infrastructure.
Concrete steps continued in early August with the arrival of a delegation from Russia’s nuclear agency Rosatom in the Burkina Faso capital. The visit allowed the two sides to have in-depth discussions on how the project would be implemented.
This orientation towards nuclear energy demonstrates Burkina Faso’s desire to diversify its energy supply sources. By utilizing this technology, the country hopes to meet the challenge of growing electricity demand while laying the foundations for a sustainable economic transformation.
