The World Health Organization declared a public health emergency on Wednesday after declaring an outbreak of smallpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This is the second time the United Nations has issued this international health warning in two years, this time warning that the disease is currently spreading in Congo’s neighboring countries.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said a coordinated global response was crucial to stop the spread of the disease and save many lives.
Smallpox can be spread through close contact, by coming into contact with someone who has the disease, which starts with a fever that then turns into ulcers all over the body.
The disease that began in Congo has now spread to neighboring countries including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, according to the World Health Organization.
