Lebanese authorities have transferred prisoners from police stations in southern Beirut’s suburbs and south Lebanon to other parts of the country amid fears of war with Israel, judicial and security officials said.
Around 220 prisoners have been transferred as a precaution. The decision comes amid growing concerns that ongoing cross-border exchanges between the Israeli army and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah could intensify following Israel’s recent killing of a senior Hezbollah official. In response, Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate.
There are widespread concerns that Beirut’s southern suburbs and southern Lebanon – areas where Hezbollah has a strong presence – could be targeted by Israeli airstrikes if all-out war breaks out. The prisoners being transferred were charged with a range of crimes, including murder and theft, officials added.
