Nationals urges parliament to act on stronger measures to combat violence against women

The National Party plans to ask the government to convene a meeting of the parliamentary social and family affairs committee as soon as possible to discuss increasing efforts to prevent future murders of women.

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said he had met with National MPs on the social and family affairs committee to discuss the steps needed to prevent further tragedies.

Grech stressed that both sides of Parliament needed to work together to ensure these changes were implemented quickly so the system no longer failed individuals.

He also mentioned that the National Party will write to the government to request the committee to meet as soon as possible to collect opinions from stakeholders and cooperate to strengthen the authorities’ actions to prevent such cases from happening.

Grech stressed that it is not enough to simply change the law, but also necessary to focus on improving implementation, enforcement and the functioning of authorities to avoid similar situations in the future.
