Larry the cat, who lives at 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister, has witnessed many political, governmental and economic changes and is currently grooming the sixth Prime Minister following the election of Sir Keir Starmer as Labour Prime Minister, who will be reunited this summer.
Larry the Cat, whose official title is “chief mouser” for the British prime minister’s office, said via his account on the “X” platform that “prime ministers come and go.”
Especially in the past 10 years, when British political life has been in turmoil, Larry the Cat has lived in the Prime Minister’s residence for 13 and a half years, longer than any other time since the late 19th century, when the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has been in office, with only four exceptions.
Former Prime Minister David Cameron was the first to bring Larry to the heart of the capital, London, in February 2011 when he rescued him from an animal shelter and brought him into his official residence.
Cameron then wanted to help solve the rat problem at headquarters. Although some say the “chief rat catcher” slacked off after some initial success, he remains as admired as ever and has retained his position after the prime ministers who succeeded Cameron, such as Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Telles and Rishi Sunak.
His fame was at its peak, so much so that when rumors circulated in the fall of 2023 that he might be suffering from health problems, the government quickly confirmed that he was healthy and happy.
Since Larry became a public figure, he has an unofficial account on the “X” platform and has accumulated about 895,000 followers, a number that significantly exceeds the number of followers on many government members’ accounts.
