Mexico City (apro) – The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) conducted a study from May 14 to 16 analyzing 27 ice cream and popsicle products.
In it analyze Consumer magazine tested the accuracy of consumer information provided on products: sugar content, protein, fat, carbohydrates, energy content, net volume and healthful quality.
Five of the 19 ice cream brands reviewed were not recommended for children.
- Holland Cremissimo is not recommended for children as it contains sweeteners, sorbitol and sucralose.
- Dass Chocolate and Precíssimo do not provide accurate information about the contents of their packaging.
- As stated on the product display label, Eden ice cream is not made from 100% milk.
- Ice Top ice cream does not provide a product name or denomination and therefore does not comply with NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010, which requires general labelling specifications for prepackaged food and non-alcoholic beverage products – Commercial and health information.
Ice cream is made from milk or derivatives (solids, whey or lactose), added sugars (sucrose, glucose and/or fructose), fruit juice, fruit products, fruit syrups, fat (cream, milk fat or vegetable fat), water, additives (emulsifiers, thickeners, flavors and/or colorings), and some brands add non-caloric sweeteners.
In the case of pallets, four of the eight brands included in the study did not meet standards or did not display accurate information on the labels.
- Amor Coketo contains sweeteners, erythritol and monk fruit. The information displayed on the packaging was false, did not comply with NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010 standards, and was missing the seal indicating excessive sodium.
- Holland Solero has added vitamin C but this is not stated in the name and therefore does not comply with NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010.
- Toysicle does not provide truthful information about the contents of the packaging, does not include an excess sugar seal, does not comply with NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010, has orange juice added and does not declare it as added sugar.
- Pelón Pelo Rico did not declare the percentage of lemons in each palette, thus failing to comply with NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010.
Water-based popsicles contain added sugars (sucrose, glucose and/or fructose), fruit juice, fruit products, fructose syrup, water, additives (thickeners, flavorings and/or colors), and ice cream, and may or may not contain non-caloric sweeteners.
Profeco advises consumers to read the labels of ice cream and/or popsicles, check the expiration date and check the sugar and fat content, as most of these products are labeled with excessive amounts of sugar and excessive amounts of saturated fat.
