GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemala’s Adriana Ruano, who is expected to win a gold medal in sport shooting at the 2024 Paris Olympics, arrived in Guatemala on Wednesday.
She was received by hundreds of people, including her family, other medalists and athletes, and the acting president, Vice President Karin Herrera, who congratulated her on her achievement.
He was visibly delighted wearing his uniform and gold medal, with a huge smile on his face, enjoying the celebrations as the motorcade passed by, with thousands of people cheering loudly, congratulating and thanking him for the Olympic gold medal.
In 2012, he joined fellow athletes, Olympic medalist Erick Barrientos, who won a silver medal in track and field, and bronze medalist Jean Pierre Brol in shooting, and Ruano formed a motorcade to Guatemalan marimba music, signing autographs and dozens of cars honking their horns in celebration.
The 29-year-old athlete has etched her name in Guatemalan history by winning the Central American country’s first Olympic gold medal and even setting an Olympic record in her shooting specialty at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Ruano started competing in shooting after years of gymnastics, but a back injury prevented him from continuing the sport. He competed in the Tokyo equestrian event, but 20 days before the event, his father, Luis Ruano, passed away. Ruano said his commitment to his father was the driving force behind his achievement.
The government plans to hold a celebration for the athletes on Saturday, when they will be able to greet the public from the presidential balcony of the National Palace of Culture.
