The governor of South Sudan’s Central Equatoria state, General Augustino Jadala Wani, has dismissed the mayor of Juba City Council.
In a gubernatorial order issued late Wednesday, Jadallah said the decision to remove Mayor Flora Gabriel Modi from office would take effect immediately.
In October 2023, Modi was appointed Mayor of Juba by former Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony.
The decree reads in part: “Governor Augustino Jadala Wani today issued a Governor’s Decree removing the Mayor of Juba City Council (JCC) in Central Equatoria State from office with effect from 2024.”
The decree did not state the reason for removing Mayor Flora.
In another decree, Governor Jadala appointed Johnson Swaka as the new mayor of Juba City Council.
The governor fired deputy mayors, including Deputy Mayor for Administration and Finance Mogga Franco Wani, Second Deputy Mayor for Social Services Thiik Thiik Mayardit and Third Deputy Mayor for Environment and Waste Management Emmanuel Juma Dayo. The governor announced that no deputy mayors were being replaced.
The governor did not explain the reasons for the changes, citing only the powers vested in him by the constitution and the Local Government Act.
