France international Eduardo Camavinga is expected to miss several weeks with Real Madrid after spraining the medial ligament of his left knee in training, the Spanish capital club announced in a statement.
However, Spanish media estimate the absence will be between six and seven weeks.
During a training session on the eve of the UEFA Super Cup final against Atalanta, he collided with colleague and compatriot Aurélien Chouamini, causing him to fall to the ground holding his left leg.
The France international will miss the team’s early season, in addition to the first window of the UEFA Nations League against the Blues on September 6 and 9 next year.
The injury is a heavy blow to the current Spanish and European champions, who may be forced to sign an extra midfielder following the retirement of German striker Toni Kroos and failing to find a replacement in the summer transfer market.
