Venezuela’s main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD), praised on Tuesday a request by the United Nations organization for the Nicolás Maduro government to “stop repression” and respect human rights in the context of the post-election crisis that the country is going through.
“As for the democratic forces, we value the statement of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, that “the climate of fear is growing” in Venezuela, following the decision of the Nicolás Maduro regime to attack a country whose only guilt is wanting a better future”, the idea was expressed in X.
Anti-Chavismo accuses Maduro of winning the July 28 elections with “a vote mainly for United Democratic Alliance standard-bearer Edmundo González Urrutia,” against those who reject his continued hold on power, who denounced fraud and claimed victory by a wide margin.
Likewise, the alliance said it, like Turk, “rejects Maduro’s package of laws intended to further restrict the rights of Venezuelans,” alluding to the legal proposals that the Chavista-controlled parliament began discussing this Tuesday to establish, among other things, controls on the funding of non-governmental organizations.
Amid protests against Maduro’s victory declaration and the response by law enforcement forces, the UN human rights chief called for the release of “all those arbitrarily detained” and asked them to respect judicial guarantees in the process.
According to state sources, more than 2,400 people have been arrested since July 29, some during demonstrations and others during police operations, and 25 people have died in violence that the government blames on the opposition, while anti-Chavismo is blamed on the state security forces, acting on orders from above.
The National Electoral Council (CNE), which claimed it was the victim of a cyberattack on voting day, has yet to publish classified results confirming Maduro’s victory, in violation of its own rules, a silence that has been questioned by many countries.
For its part, the PUD published on its website “83.5%” of electoral records, which, according to the union, confirm that its candidate won the presidential election.
