The University of Port Harcourt has denied claims that it charged final year students a processing fee of N649,400.
The university said the reports on online media platforms that circulated the information were false and misleading.
The Director of Information, Publications and Public Relations of United Ports, Dr Sam Kpenu, clarified the matter in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday and sent to the press titled “Refuting false reports on customs clearance fees for final year students”.
Kpenu said UNIPORT’s tuition fees are among the lowest among federal universities in the country. He added that the institution also offers scholarships to support students who face financial difficulties during their studies.
He further stressed that universities usually extend the deadline for tuition payment to allow students ample time to arrange their finances. He categorically denied the existence of the “medical clearance fee” or “matriculation fee” mentioned in the report.
The statement read: “An online report by Sahara Reporter newspaper has come to the attention of the authorities of the University of Port Harcourt that final year students of the University of Port Harcourt were required to pay a customs clearance fee of N649,400.
“We wish to clearly state that this information is completely false.
“UNIPORT is committed to providing affordable and accessible higher education. Our institution charges the lowest tuition fees compared to other federal universities in Nigeria. We also offer various scholarships to support students who are experiencing financial difficulties and are unable to pay tuition fees.
“In addition, we have extended the tuition payment deadline to allow students ample time to arrange their finances.
“We encourage students and the public to rely solely on official communications from the University of Port Harcourt for accurate information on fees and financial matters.
“The information provided by Sahara Reporters is completely false and misleading. The medical clearances or admission fees claimed in the false reports do not exist. We urge the media to always verify their reports before publishing.”
