Today is Groundhog Day, and once again the nation’s eyes are on a small town in western Pennsylvania. Every February 2, the only story anyone can talk about is whether or not Phil the Groundhog can see his shadow. If he can, then there are six more weeks of winter. If not, then spring is on the way.
This year, a cruel twist of fate has brought back memories of the 1993 film Groundhog Daythe two Planet Money hosts find themselves facing a curse. They will be stuck in this never-ending groundhog news cycle until they can find a new February 2 story to tell…something that has nothing to do with a furry prophet…something that changes the economy forever.
So get up, campers, and don’t forget to put on your boots as we journey through a series of past Groundhog Days in an attempt to find historic sites.
The show is produced by Dave Blanchard and edited by Sally Helm. It is designed by Robert Rodriguez and Gilly Moon, and fact-checked by Sierra Juarez. Planet Money’s acting executive producer is Jess Jiang.
