Football Coach Vojvodina Province Bozidar Bandovich Novi Sad midfielder Vukan Savicevic said they are optimistic about their rematch against Maribor in the third qualifying round of the divisional league.
On August 8, Maribor players defeated Vojvodina 2:1 at home in the first match of the third qualifying round of the LK.
The rematch is scheduled for Thursday night at 8pm in Bachka Topola.
– An important match for us. In the first match we did well in some areas, but in some situations we saw some questionable decisions. We have to be more focused and as a coach all I can do is help the players to win. I believe in these players and my colleagues, there is no doubt about that. Although there was no result, we played well,” Bandovic said in a press conference, according to the club’s official website.
He reminded that the Vojvodina team began to be formed in January.
– We have done a lot of good things in seven months, and I say this for the players, not for myself. I would not want to stay at any club because I get along well with someone, but based on my work, my team and the way I play. As for our confidence and hope going into the next round, I think these guys give the fans confidence that we can do more with our energy and our game. It’s a big challenge. The Vojvodina coach noted that the players who have come since January have helped and they will help too.
He said no new player would be a failure.
– Why do I say this? The players were prepared in the last week, and it takes time to establish communication. Nevertheless, we are close and I am sure we will be able to get through it. I am the first one to say that a venue should be built, because these people deserve a good venue, but now we are traveling all the time. These are not excuses, these are facts that require patience. The injuries of Vukanovic, Poletanovic and Radulovic are not what we count on, it is better to be together as a team. Alexa will rest for a few months, we have to wait, but I always say that you can’t do without him – said Bandovic.
The Vojvodina coach admitted that he would accept a bad game if the pass was given against Maribor, but added that it was not an adequate plan in the long run.
– I heard them say that we played well, but there were no results. As a coach, I have some hope if I have a match, I have repeated this several times. Do I accept that we do not play well in the next game and qualify? The answer is “yes”, but if we do not play well in the series, then I have little hope. This could not be clearer, Bandovich added.
He said fighting “two fronts” was not easy.
– Did you see that against TSC they were fresher, it was logical after our tough match because we saw the opposite. Our team kept the tempo, played with energy, played tight, we chased the result but we were not tired at all. There was a little mental fatigue because we travelled non-stop. We have to believe, we are in a big club. Most of these players who come are not prepared, so they need time, and when we play for three or four days it is difficult. Bandovich said that the new players still need to reach the level of the ones who have been there since the winter and have done their preparation.
The Vojvodina coach noted that Maribor has dangerous players.
– We saw in the first game how dangerous Ilicic is when facing the goal, but there is also Jakupovic, whose goal we watched before the game. Maribor also has dangerous players on the flanks, and we need to pay attention to all of them. I think that if we reach our level, we have a great chance to get through – concluded Bandovic.
Vojvodina football player Vukan Savicevic said everyone in the team knows their current situation.
– We had to mobilize and suppress the team in some way. We had many meetings after TSC, we knew what we had to do. The coach pointed out something to us, we also had a meeting with the president Dragor Ljub Zbilic, we all knew that our task was to get through Maribor. This is a high-quality team, we all knew that Ilicic was the most dangerous, but football is a game with 11 players, we are strong as a team, we can overcome this obstacle – said Savicevic.
He thanked the fans for their support so far and invited them to be with the team on Thursday as well.
– The fans gave us a huge support, I am grateful for that. It is not easy for them either, they are always traveling, I saw them on social networks calling on as many people as possible to come to Bačka Topola, I hope it will be like this on Thursday too – Savicevic noted.
He also answered the question of why Vojvodina doesn’t shoot more at the opponent’s goal.
– Everyone analyses everyone, everyone knows that we like to play from the goalkeeper. In some moments, we also forced Ajax to press low. Many of our opponents play like this, in which there is not much space for long-range shots. Maribor’s attack surprised us a little bit, and we had to try more through crosses. We are working on it, we are analyzing the opponent, and as far as these tactical problems are concerned, I believe that the coaching staff has a solution – stressed Savicevic.
He said he had no doubt that Vojvodina would show its true colors and winning mentality.
– As a team, we have a strong winning mentality and we showed it even against Ajax. The match against Kukaricki made us lose some confidence, but I am sure we will come back and show that we have quality and we should go far. We really believe in our team – Savićević concluded.
