08-14-24.-The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Office of its Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression (RELE) urge the National Congress not to approve the Monitoring, Regularization, Performance and Financing Law for non-governmental and related organizations, whose discussion will resume on August 13 this year.
The IACHR warned that the approval of the law could arbitrarily restrict the rights of association, freedom of expression, and public participation in Venezuela at a time when civic space is already severely restricted.
“The work of human rights defenders is key to rebuilding democratic societies,” the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights stressed in a statement released through its social network X account.
This Tuesday, the National Assembly will continue its second discussion of the bill, which aims to regulate the operation and financing of non-governmental organizations in the country. The first discussion took place in January and the project was approved in May.
The possible approval of this law has raised national and international concerns, since, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and civil society organizations, it could worsen the human rights situation in Venezuela, further shrink the space for civil society, and limit the possibilities for monitoring and reporting on rights violations.
