Seoul, South Korea – The International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), an affiliate of Heavenly Culture, World Peace, and Restoration of Light (HWPL), hosted the Youth Engagement in Peacebuilding Working Group (YEPW) on August 10. The online gathering brought together about 10 young members from Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and South Korea to explore the critical role of youth education in promoting peace and harmony.
The main focus of Youth Employment Week that day was to discuss the multifaceted challenges related to education and youth unemployment in the Asia-Pacific region. Participants shared insights and experiences, highlighting the interconnectedness of these issues. Nitin Raj, a student from Atlantic International University, stressed that there is an urgent need to improve the quality and accessibility of education in Pacific island countries. He highlighted outdated curriculum, limited resources in rural areas and transportation barriers as major obstacles. In addition, he highlighted the shocking inequalities in education, especially affecting female students, students with special needs and students living in remote areas.
Remus Brasier, a member of the Bendigo Youth Council from Australia, said a focus needed to be placed on increasing access to quality education, particularly for students with learning difficulties. He also advocated for increased funding, specialized training for professionals, and more support staff in schools. While acknowledging that Australia had a relatively high access to education, he stressed the need to continue investing in public schools and highlighted the positive impact of online and blended learning options.
Suhn Park, director of HWPL’s International Law Department, suggested that peace education, which consists of 12 courses, is a potential solution for youth education. This comprehensive approach aims to teach young people to understand their role in the world, how to interact with peers, superiors and elders, and to develop empathy and strength of character.
YEPW provides a valuable platform for young leaders and peace advocates to exchange ideas, share experiences and develop strategies to address critical challenges facing their communities. IPYG is a global youth organization dedicated to promoting peace and harmony among young people around the world. It will continue to work to support youth-led initiatives that promote peace, education and sustainable development.
