The National Railway Office (ONCF) is accelerating the implementation of the high-speed line (LGV) project connecting Kenitra and Marrakech, a move that marks a key step in the development of Morocco’s railway network.
On Tuesday, ONCF launched consultations on the completion of civil works for a key part of the project. The section in question stretches from kilometre point (PK) 5+450 to PK 10+000 on the Casablanca-Sidi el Eddy line, between Oasis station and the future Casa Sud station.
This market includes several important technical aspects. In addition to earthworks, two road bridges are planned to be built on the Casa Urbana highway and the RN1 national road. In addition, three railway bridges will be built on Boulevard Fez, Boulevard El Quds and RP 3011.
The new LGV promises impressive performance. Designed to have a top speed of 350 km/h, it will operate at 320 km/h on a route of approximately 450 km. This technical feat will make it possible to connect Tangier directly to Marrakech without having to go through Casablanca, thus optimizing travel times.
The project also considers the option of reaching Casablanca by train. Two routes are currently being studied, demonstrating the project’s flexibility in the face of urban constraints. In addition, an alternative route through Benslimane to Nouaseur is envisaged. The latter could accommodate a new station or distribution center, thus strengthening the region’s rail infrastructure.
This significant progress on the Kenitra-Marrakech LGV project is part of a wider vision to modernize Morocco’s railway network. It is expected to not only improve connectivity between the kingdom’s major cities, but also stimulate economic development along the route.
