Replacing a broken screen, camera or iPhone battery could cost us less in a few months. Thanks to Apple for taking a long-awaited move: it opens up the possibility of using old spare parts in repairs. It announced it a few days ago on its website, a new product that should be released in the autumn, starting with the iPhone 15 or later.

In short, we will be able to repair these phones using old parts (screens, batteries and cameras) without making any modifications to the functionality of the product. Yes, because there is always a loss of functionality when we use iPhone spare parts that are not new or original.

Of course, Apple will continue to limit the functionality of products created by other companies (and therefore “non-original”), at least in the near future; instead, the novelty is to give full citizenship to original second-hand iPhone parts. The device will “treat” them as new devices. This saves users a certain amount of money and is also good for the environment.

Restoring with Used Parts: What Has Changed Since the Fall

Until now, replacing certain parts with components from other iPhones has resulted in warnings on the screen and disabled certain features. For example, if you replace the screen of an iPhone, the True Tone feature that makes the screen colors more natural will stop working. The technical reason is that these components are effectively tied to the device they were originally supplied with, a practice commonly known as “pairing.” Until now, the only way to restore full functionality has been through the “System Setup” process by an authorized technician using new Apple parts certified by the company.

It has also always been the most expensive way to repair an iPhone.

The new feature announced means that configuration can be done directly on the phone. It no longer requires the repairman to provide the serial number of the part. Apple says it had to do a lot of work to figure out how to make this new setup work properly while maintaining security, privacy and product quality. “Used Apple original accessories will now enjoy the full functionality and safety guaranteed by original factory calibration, just like new Apple original accessories,” we read in a note. The repair of smartphones has become an increasingly common practice because at current market levels. Maturity: users tend to keep the same device for more than two years; in fact, technological innovations from one year to the next are now only incremental, so much so that smartphone sales have been stagnant for years.
