América clinched a spot in the League Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday by defeating St. Louis City 4-2 in a thrilling contest in front of 15,746 fans at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.
America, from the Mexican soccer league, seemed to have everything in place to easily defeat their MLS opponents, but as the game wore on, the path to finally restoring order and defeating a plucky St. Louis side became more complicated.
The first goal was a brilliant play by Brian Rodríguez himself after receiving a long pass from the right wing. The Uruguayan received the ball, ran in from the left, broke through the San Luis defense, sneaked between them and made a short pass to Diego Valdés, who passed the ball back to Rodríguez for a beautiful score. The score was 1-0.
In the second half, the Eagles continued to keep the pressure and came very close to the second goal, but St. Louis came out stronger and within 10 minutes of the restart, Indiana Vasiliev and Edward Lowen scored from the penalty spot to reverse the score.
The tie was a brilliant triangle attack, and in the 49th minute, Hartle Marcel made a short pass to Lewin, who passed the ball to Vasilyev, making the score 1-1.
In the 56th minute, a foul in the penalty area gave St. Louis the opportunity to expand the score, and after Lewen’s powerful charge, it unexpectedly led 2-1.
America continued to press, and Valdés scored with a header, and Mexico regained its composure. In the 79th minute, Richard Sanchez made a cross from the right, and surprisingly only Valdés scored with a header, changing the score to 2-2, and the American fans were in an uproar.
The Mexicans won in the 88th minute when Rodriguez’s second powerful shot allowed Aguilas to regain the lead after a suspicious handball in the penalty area, leaving Roman Burki with no chance to make the score 3-2.
The referee did not review the penalty as America was preparing to take in the 59th minute, stopping the shot after a VAR review.
St. Louis did not give up and attacked with all their might.
In the 90+8 corner, Burki went to the Americas area to try to equalize with a header, but it was a costly move, and Luis Maragon got the ball and hurriedly served it for the team to counterattack. Rodrigo Aguirre took advantage of the fact that the legend of St. Louis was severely blocked. The Uruguayan striker took the ball after Maragon’s long pass, avoided the opponent’s defense, and finished the shot alone, although Burki had returned to the penalty area. It was 4-2 for the Lapidaries.
The Americas will face the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 17 in Carson to determine who advances to the league semifinals.
