Ecuador’s Vice President Veronica Abad has filed a complaint of political gender violence against head of state Daniel Noboa with the South American country’s controversial electoral court.

The complaint was submitted last Thursday to Prime Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, Deputy Minister Esteban Torres and Adviser Diana Yacom, according to local media reports.

Ekwawesa confirmed that Abad warned of the move last week during his occasional appearance before a legislative committee investigating irregularities in public administration. “My action on this issue will be very clear in the coming days and I hope it will receive the due support of conscious people,” he said.

He noted that under the Democratic Code, political gender violence is considered a very serious electoral violation punishable by fines, dismissal and/or suspension of participation rights for two to four years.

Last Thursday, Noboya arranged for Abad to be transferred to Turkey as tensions in the Middle East escalated, endangering the safety of Israeli residents.

In late 2023, Noboya was unexpectedly appointed ambassador to Israel, a sign that Noboya was moving further away from the campaign to the second round, something Abad said he could not explain.

“These are the questions we are still asking ourselves. First, the president cannot explain why he harbors hatred for the vice president,” Abad said. She said she felt “exiled” and denounced Noboa’s “hostile” treatment, allegedly aimed at forcing her to resign.
