The union representing the plant’s 2,800 workers rejected the latest proposal from Escondida Holdings after it negotiated an improved labor agreement. Striking workers were demanding higher wages amid rising global copper prices.
No end date has been set for the strike, with union leadership warning it was considering a “prolonged strike”.
The Escondida mine accounts for about 5% of global copper production. In 2017, miners went on strike for 44 days, leading to a rise in global copper prices.
