Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said at the daily briefing that heavy rains and severe flooding in the Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Mali and Togo have affected more than 700,000 people.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed concern about flooding in the region.
OCHA said that in Chad, the worst-hit region, more than 245,000 people were affected by floods in just a few weeks, which destroyed or damaged more than 60,000 houses, affected schools and medical facilities, and hindered people’s access to health care and education.
Haq said the UN and its partners are supporting the response efforts of governments in the region, including the distribution of food, shelter, water and sanitation assistance.
The spokesperson said that this year the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund allocated $10 million to the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger to respond to emergencies related to climate shocks such as floods.
OCHA said seasonal forecasts for 2024 show that cumulative rainfall will be above average during June-August and July-September in areas of the Sahel region and some West African countries that are already prone to floods.
