The museum is not only future-oriented. It should also show the Navy’s current story. New technologies will soon explain the Navy’s changing role.

For more than 60 years, the Naval Museum has been telling the story of the Navy’s long-standing commitment to maritime security. The museum is located in the former Willem Süd naval shipyard in Den Helder, next to the Dutch Naval Port. It attracts around 100,000 visitors every year.

The existing building formed the basis for the renovation. This preserved the historical character of the site.

National Military Heritage Collection

The Naval Museum is one of the three major defence museums. Together they are responsible for the preservation and management of the nation’s military heritage collection. They make it accessible to a wide audience. In this way they contribute to the recognition of the important role that the armed forces have played and continue to play in the long military history of the Netherlands.

In this time of change, it is important that defence museums tell military stories, often personal ones. In this way, they help explain current events. This increases the impact on society.

Construction of the new modern Naval Museum will begin in 2026. Preparations for the renovation are scheduled to begin in autumn 2024.
